Shericka Jackson and Nickisha Pryce Cop Gold in Diamond League Opener

SHAOXING, China – Jamaicans Shericka Jackson and Nickisha Pryce won their respective events at the opening Wanda Diamond League meet here on Saturday.

pryceNickisha Pryce (left) crosses the finish line to win the women’s 400mIn her first outdoor race of the season, Jackson crossed the finish line in 22.07 seconds, tied for fourth fastest in the world this year, to finish ahead of Olympic and World Championship gold medalist Shaunae Miller Uibo of the Bahamas in 22.26 seconds. Anavia Battle of the USA finished third in 22.40 seconds.

Meanwhile, Pryce, the national champion, produced a strong finish in the final 50 metres to catch American Aaliyah Butler just before the finish line to win in 49.75 seconds, third-fastest in the world so far this year. Butler was a close second in 49.78 seconds, while Cuba’s Roxana Gomez grabbed bronze in 50.24.

Jamaica’s Stacey-Ann Williams was fourth in 50.59 seconds, while Barbados’ Sada Williams placed fifth in 50.60 seconds.

Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas finished second in the women’s 100-metre hurdles in 12.38 seconds, behind Masai Russell of the USA in 12.25. Tobi Amusan of Nigeria was third in 12.41 seconds.

Jamaicans Megan Simmonds (12.73), Ackera Nugent (12.98) finished fourth and sixth respectively.

In the men’s equivalent, World Championship silver medallist Orlando Bennett was fourth in the 110m hurdles in a season’s best 13.20 seconds.
