BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Chinelle Henry smashed 21 runs off the final over of the match to help the Jamaica Empress Women pull of a spectacular come-from-behind one-wicket victory via the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern method over the Guyana Amazon Warriors Women in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League here on Sunday.
With 17 runs needed from the final over bowled by left-arm spinner Chloe Tryon, Henry stepped up to the plate to smash three huge sixes – including one off the last ball – as the Empress Women, set a revised total of 132 in 19 overs, finished on 136 for nine.
Earlier, the Amazon Warriors, led by a half century by Shemaine Campbelle reached 138 for seven in 20 overs at Kensington Oval.
That total looked like it would be enough with the Empress Women struggling on 115 for seven at the end of the 18th over, still in need of 17 runs from the final over.
Tryon began the over with a wide, with Rosemary Mair being run out attempting a suicidal second run the next delivery.
Henry then smashed her for a six over midwicket, but Syeda Aroob Shah was then run out to leave the Empress Women 124 for nine with three balls remaining and eight runs required.
After turning down a single, Henry clobbered the last two deliveries for sixes to spark wild celebrations among her camp.
She finished unbeaten on 41 from 21 balls and hit four sixes and three fours.
Earlier, the Amazon Warriors were poised to post a much bigger total after being 104 for two at one stage.
But once Nonkululeko Mlaba dismissed Realeanna Grimmond for 45 and Stafanie Taylor had Campbelle caught for a well-played 56 off 33 balls with seven fours and two sixes, their scoring dried up on the back of some disciplined bowling by the Empress Women.
Mlaba finished with 2-15 and Taylor grabbed 2-24.
