MIAMI-DADE, FL — Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins partnered with the non-profit organization Equality Lab to host a “Virtual Reality (VR) Genie” event at Jewish Community Services of South Florida in Miami Beach on April 4. The event provided seniors with an invigorating VR experience. Over 30 seniors were able to fulfill their wishes of swimming with the dolphins, visiting Europe, and traveling back to their homeland – all through cutting-edge technology.

MIAMI —The Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department’s Disability Services Division is now offering free aquatic exercise classes for disabled and older veterans at select Miami-Dade pools. The classes are being held weekdays, 9-10 a.m., now through Dec. 20, 2019. Pre-registration is not required.

Emergency department (ED) visits by people age 65 and older who were identified with opioid misuse and dependence more than tripled between 2006 and 2014, according to new research published by researchers at Towson University. The study also discovered that opioid misuse was associated with an increased number of chronic conditions, greater injury risk, and higher rates of alcohol dependence and mental health diagnoses.
Social Security is required by law to review, from time to time, the current medical condition of all people receiving disability benefits to make sure they continue to have a qualifying disability. Generally, if a person’s health hasn’t improved, or if their disability still keeps them from working, they will continue to receive their benefits.
