Police in Belize are Investigating Rape Allegations Against Prominent Attorney

BELMOPAN, Belize – Police Commissioner Chester Williams has confirmed that a prominent attorney and member of the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) is assisting police investigations following allegations made by two women

chesterwiPolice Commissioner Chester Williams speaking to reportersThe incident reportedly occurred at the lawyer’s residence here in Belize City I during the early hours of last Friday after a night of socializing at a popular establishment.

On Saturday, both women filed reports with the Belize Police Department, and Williams said that investigators have taken statements from the alleged victims and have also conducted interviews with the attorney.

“Saturday morning, I believe I was briefed by the head Crimes Investigation Branch here in Belize City of the allegations of rape being made by two females against an attorney who is based in Belize City,” Williams told a news conference.

“According to the allegations, as outlined by the two females, is that they were socializing at …a nightclub here in Belize City where they met this attorney who, according to them, they recognized from social media and he offered them drinks whilst at the nightclub which they accepted.”

Williams told reporters that when the nightclub closed, both women left with the attorney after they had asked him to take them home.

“ According to them, while on their way home they were told by the attorney that they would stop at his house for one final drink, after which he would take them home.  They agreed and they stopped off at a house, according to them, and whilst at the house they continued drinking and taking some shots of tequila.

“ One of them said that she drank to the extent that she could not recall what took place after leaving the nightclub until the next morning when she was awakened on the bed in the nude beside the attorney who was also seminude and her other partner who was there with her at the same time, told her certain things.”

Williams told reporters that the police department is hoping to receive soon instructions from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions on how to proceed with the matter.

He said both women had been medically examined.
