Jamaican Government to Continue Partnership With Cuban Medical Personnel

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton says the government will continue its partnership with Cuba, as it relates to the participation of the Cuban medical mission.

minischristoHe made the statement earlier his week in the wake of concern expressed by the United States about labor breaches allegedly committed by Cuba, and the involvement of countries that facilitate the Cuban medical missions.

However, Tufton once again stressed that the arrangement between Jamaica and Cuba has been of significant benefit, over the years.

The Health Minister who was making his contribution to the sectoral debate in parliament, further noted that the future of human resources in health will require more collaborations.

He stated that there is need to look wider, and adjust traditional thinking around how to get more skills in healthcare.

He also reiterated that the government is exploring long-term relationships, in training and clinical exchanges with India, Philippines and Nigeria.

These countries, he noted, were targeted based on existing friendships, compatibility with language, training modules and technology availability.
