KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Ministry of Health and Wellness has awarded nearly J$48 million to five researchers for projects aimed at improving health outcomes and strengthening evidence-based decision-making in Jamaica.
Health Minister Dr Christopher TuftonThe recipients were announced Friday under the ministry’s Research for Wellness Fund, which was launched by Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton during his 2019 Sectoral Debate presentation.
The ministry said the fund reflects its continued commitment to encouraging innovation, scientific inquiry and locally developed solutions to Jamaica’s health challenges.
The five projects will examine critical public health issues, including mental health, breast cancer, air pollution and wellness among people living with noncommunicable diseases.
The research will also address related risk factors such as tobacco use, physical inactivity, harmful alcohol consumption, unhealthy diets and air pollution.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Tufton said the selection process was highly competitive and that the successful projects demonstrated both scientific merit and relevance to Jamaica’s public health priorities.
