Miami-Dade County Public Schools Helping Students Connect With Hispanic Heritage

The Hispanic community has a rich heritage that spans back centuries. Hispanic Heritage Month which is celebrated every year from September 15 to October 15 honors the contributions, histories and cultures of Hispanic and Latino Americans in the United States.

angieAngie Kasselakis, Food and Nutrition Officer MDCPSMiami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will be celebrating the month with a closer look at the cuisine, cultures and traditions that helped shape many of Central and South America’s tastiest comfort dishes.

Food is a focal point of Hispanic culture. The diverse tapestry of the Hispanic diaspora is seasoned with generational recipes passed down bringing together families, friends and strangers in times of need and celebration. Recently M-DCPS’ Department of Food and Nutrition unveiled new school breakfast and lunch items for the 2023-2024 school year.

Along with our traditional casserole dishes, such as picadillo, arroz con pollo, and roasted pork, we also have Cuban mojo chicken drumsticks, pan de bono, and our chicken empanadas. Our Hispanic side dishes include rice with beans, yuca fries, plantains, and moros. This year, we have brought back the guavalitos, a guava and cream cheese pastry, and a 3 oz. pork patty, as well as the addition of the egg and cheese breakfast empanadas and beef and cheese tacos on whole grain tortillas.

School breakfasts and lunches are crucial for student health and well-being, but they also have significant benefits on learning and academic performance. Good nutrition supports optimum brain function and focus, providing students with the best opportunity to succeed.

These meals are packed with nutrients like fiber, vitamins and minerals, and are associated with better heart health, positive nutritional value, anti-inflammatory properties, good digestion, improved brain function, and reduced cancer risk. All Miami-Dade public schools offer breakfast and lunch free of charge to all students; proving again why M-DCPS is your best choice!

The Department of Food and Nutrition is also sponsoring a contest challenging students to create a poster inspired by this year's theme, "Prosperity, Power and Progress" while incorporating a food component that honors Hispanic Heritage Month. Join M-DCPS in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month 2023. ¡Buen provecho!
