GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Omari Glasgow and Nicolette Fernandes took home the coveted 2024 Senior Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards, respectively, when the National Sports Commission (NSC) held their annual gala on Saturday.
Omari Glasgow (left) receives his Sportsman of the Year award from Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr.Glasgow, the country’s all-time leading goal scorer for the Golden Jaguars, narrowly pipped bodybuilder Nicholas Albert, to become the first footballer to ever win the award.
The 21-year-old striker cemented his place in national folklore by powering Guyana to a historic promotion to CONCACAF Nations League A.
Glasgow’s efforts saw him secure both the Best Young Player and Top Scorer awards in the competition.
With an astonishing 21 goals in just 33 international appearances, the forward’s remarkable run of form proved decisive, with Albert, who earned his Pro Card in 2024, named runner-up.
Meanwhile, Fernandes, a veteran squash player, capped off an impressive year by winning her second World Masters title.
The former world No. 19 delivered a flawless performance at the World Squash Federation Masters in the Nederlands, to win gold in the Women’s 40-and-over category.
Her teammate Ashley Khalil finished runner-up.
Sprinters Malachi Austin and Athaleyha Hinckson were named Junior Sportsman of the Year and Junior Sportswoman of the year, respectively.
Austin starred at the CARIFTA Games, winning gold in the 400m, and contributing to two record-breaking runs in the 4x400m mixed relay, while Hinckson claimed Guyana’s first-ever gold medal in the CARIFTA Games U-17 women’s 100m, before adding another gold at the South American U-20 Championships.
Guyana’s senior national squash team was named Team of the Year.
