Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Historic Visit to Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Former British prime minister, Tony Blair, has arrived here on a two-day visit becoming the first former British leader to visit the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.

blairtPresident Irfaan Ali (Left ) and former British prime Minister Tony Blair (DPI Photo)A statement issued by the Office of the President, said that Blair, who served as prime minister from 1997-2007, had held talks with President Irfaan Ali, during the coronation of King Charles III in May.

The statement said that during the discussions the two men “realised that they share the values of democracy, openness and equity” with Ali extending an invitation to the former prime minister “to build on their shared vision”.

Blair is the executive chair of the not-for-profit, TBI, which empowers governments and leaders to materialize bold ideas into reality by advising on strategy, policy and delivery.

Blair has since held talks with President Ali and according to the statement is “scheduled to participate in a sit-down conversation with President Ali which will be moderated by Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin.

“They will discuss global climate challenges, Guyana’s leading role in environmental protection and the importance of education and scientific research.”

The statement said that Blair is also expected to visit a number of infrastructural projects and mark the inauguration of the Sophia Point Rainforest Research Centre founded by United Kingdom politician David Lammy and his wife Nicola Green.
