Commissioners McGhee and Monestime Urge President Biden to Help Haiti During Crisis

MIAMI-DADE  Commissioners Kionne L. McGhee and Jean Monestime are urging U.S. President Joe Biden and his administration to pursue additional measures to secure peace and a corruption-free election in Haiti after the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. 

JEANMONESThe Miami-Dade County Commission on July 20 adopted a resolution sponsored by Commissioners McGhee and Monestime urging President Joe Biden, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and the entire Biden administration to:

  • Halt all deportations to Haiti.
  • Enhance security protection for U.S. embassy staff in Haiti and all American nationals in Haiti.
  • Help Haitian National Police secure peace and advance law and order within Haiti’s borders.
  • Help Haiti, through diplomacy, ensure a peaceful transition and democratic election free of corruption.
  • Coordinate an international effort for humanitarian aid and support in Haiti.

“The dire situation in Haiti has left its residents and visitors uncertain about their future and fearful about continued violence and upheaval. We stand with all of those suffering in Haiti during these troubling times,” Commissioner McGhee said. 

Commissioner Monestime said, “As I encourage the U.S. to help facilitate a Haitian-led Democratic solution, it is also important that we urge the Biden Administration to halt deportations, appoint a Special Envoy and support the Haitian people to ensure a peaceful transition through diplomatic means.”
