10th Annual Queens of Reggae Island Honorary Ceremony Scheduled For May 31st

Three months from the 10th Queens Of Reggae Island Honorary Ceremony (QORIHC), Laurell Nurse is keeping the recipients close to her chest.

Since she started the event in 2016, most of its awardees are involved in reggae. Nurse, who is also a singer known as Mye Laurell, believes women have made great strides in Jamaican music.

"In 2026, I believe the woman's status is more respected and undeniably a moving force. Shensea, Spice, Chevelle Franklin are in demand, selling tickets. Koffee's Grammy (win) was historical and Lila Ike owned the Grammy stage in her segment at the recent Grammys like a boss lady," she said.

Nurse also praised the achievements of Lady Saw, who was a dancehall titan before converting to Christianity. And rising singer Naomi Cowan, daughter of Tommy Cowan and Carlene Davis.

"That is what QORIHC is about, having the princesses in entertainment be recognized as queens at a fabulous public event. The Jamaican female reggae face is doing outstanding things," she said.

While she grew up in Jamaica admiring stalwarts like Marcia Griffiths, it was not until Nurse migrated to the United States that she pursued a music career.

During a discussion with pioneer deejay Sister Nancy,  the matter of gender disparity came up. That inspired the concept for the QORIHC.

At the previous ceremony, in March, 2024, Nurse's organization honored several dancehall-reggae acts including Sharon Marley, Tifa, D'Angel and Macka Diamond.

In 2025, Mye Laurell released It’s My House, her latest song. Produced by Richie Stephens, it is a cover of Diana Ross' 1979 hit.
