San Juan, Puerto Rico — Hotel El Convento, widely recognized as one of the Caribbean’s most emblematic luxury boutique hotels and the oldest member of the Historic Hotels of America program, proudly celebrates its 375th anniversary—an extraordinary milestone marking nearly four centuries of history, transformation, and cultural legacy in the heart of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.
“Celebrating 375 years of Hotel El Convento is, in essence, celebrating the soul of Old San Juan. It represents centuries of resilience, heritage, and evolution that have been built from the 17th century to the present day, continuing to create new experiences with every guest,” said Henry Neumann, General Manager of Hotel El Convento.
From Convent to Cultural Landmark: A Story of Reinvention
The history of Hotel El Convento dates to 1646, when construction began on the first Carmelite convent in the Americas. Inaugurated in 1651 as the Monastery of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the building originally served as a space of faith and contemplation within the walled city of San Juan.
After the convent closed in 1903, the building underwent several transformations, serving at different times as retail shops, ballrooms, and even mechanical workshops. In 1959, visionary entrepreneur Robert Woolworth acquired the property and led a meticulous restoration that revived its Spanish colonial architecture. In 1962, Hotel El Convento officially opened as a hotel, preserving its central courtyard, soaring wooden ceilings, and handcrafted architectural details that still define the property today.
In the 1990s, a group of executives undertook another revitalization effort, carefully balancing historic preservation with the expectations of contemporary luxury. The result is a hotel that is now part of the exclusive Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection—one that does more than host guests; it transports them through time.
Recognized for Excellence and Historic Preservation
Throughout its history, Hotel El Convento has earned numerous accolades that reaffirm its standing as a benchmark for cultural and luxury hospitality.
In 2024 and 2025, the property topped the nation’s list of “Best Historic Hotels in Adaptive Reuse,” an honor awarded by the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP). The distinction validates the hotel’s successful integration of contemporary luxury within the framework of a 17th-century historic structure.
To ensure the guest experience continues to evolve, the hotel recently completed a $8 million modernization project. The improvements elevated the level of sophistication across guest rooms and common areas, including the renovation of furnishings and flooring in its main corridors—while carefully preserving the distinctive character that has earned recognition from international publications such as Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure.
Host to Legends
Throughout its history as a hotel, El Convento has welcomed renowned figures from the worlds of arts, culture, and politics, including Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote, Rita Hayworth, Gloria Vanderbilt, and maestro Pablo Casals, who was known to delight guests with his cello performances in the hotel’s courtyards.
Even legendary Puerto Rican actor Raúl Juliá took some of his earliest artistic steps at the hotel’s Lamplighter Lounge during the 1960s. Each visit has enriched the living narrative of this renowned property, making it a place where history and culture intersect with exceptional hospitality.
A Unique and Unrepeatable Experience
Hotel El Convento is far more than a place to stay—it is an immersive journey into the cultural heritage of the Caribbean.
Its original Spanish colonial architecture—featuring its symbolic interior courtyard, high wooden ceilings, and meticulously preserved handcrafted details—offers travelers an authentic connection to the past that no contemporary hotel can replicate.
Located in the heart of Old San Juan, steps away from historic forts, museums, art galleries, and the city’s legendary cobblestone streets, the hotel serves as the perfect starting point for visitors seeking to experience Puerto Rico at its most authentic.
This privileged location, combined with modern luxury standards, makes it a preferred destination for cultural travelers, destination weddings, and high-profile guests from the United States, Europe, and Latin America.
375th Anniversary Commemoration
To mark its 375th anniversary, Hotel El Convento will host a series of special events and experiences throughout the year highlighting its historic, cultural, and architectural legacy.
The celebration program will include gastronomic, educational, cultural, and architectural initiatives designed to honor the building’s rich history and its evolution over nearly four centuries. These experiences will unfold throughout the year, inviting guests, partners, and heritage enthusiasts to take part in this meaningful celebration that underscores the hotel’s enduring legacy and historical significance in the heart of Old San Juan.
Looking Toward the Future: Expanding the Legacy
Peter Hopgood, President of International Hospitality Development, also shared that as part of the ownership’s vision for growth and historic preservation, Hotel El Convento has announced plans to expand its room inventory with the development of 15 new guest rooms in the historic José “Popi” Alegría Building, a structure built in 1949 and located near the property.
The project will respect the architectural essence of the era, incorporating design elements inspired by the 1940s to create an atmosphere that honors its historical heritage while offering the comfort and elegance of contemporary luxury.
This expansion reaffirms the hotel’s commitment to continuous evolution while preserving the architectural heritage of Old San Juan and enriching the experience of its guests.
