Airport Police At Cheddi Jagan International Airport Arrested For Demanding Money From Passenger
GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Police attached to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport were arrested after demanding money from a passenger before her items could have been released.
In a statement on Sunday, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Sunday said a claim by the passenger was verified by closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and other evidence .
Police also said the officers involved have been placed under close arrest while the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) carries out a full investigation.
The police force added that the Guyana government has instructed that as of Monday , all law enforcement officers operating at any port of entry, whether at airports or other border points, will be required to wear body cameras as a measure to enhance accountability and transparency.
The GPF says it has zero tolerance for corruption and warned that any officer found guilty of extortion or bribery will face the “full force of the law.”
The Police Force reminded that no payment of any kind is required to clear lawful items through CJIA or any other port.
“If anyone is asked for money, report it immediately to the nearest police authority.”
