Gospel Singer Cario Young's First Album, New Day, Was Released June 19

Like American trendsetter Kirk Franklin, Cario Young’s concept of gospel music is broad. He sees no boundaries when using lyrics and rhythms to spread the word of God.

carioyoNew Day, the Toronto, Canada-based singer’s first album, was released on June 19. Young co-produced the 14-song set with Canute Ellis, a seasoned pro with similar views in terms of recording Christian music.

Young says he and Ellis, in collaboration with Craig McDonald, produced an album that appeals to eclectic ears.

“I believe as a team we did. I believe the conversations embedded in the messaging of these songs will evoke thought processes and affect how we approach sharing the gospel through song,” he reasoned. “Every touch point that is of concern is touched on this album and addressed in a unique way that we believe will bless and change the hearts of many.”

Among New Day’s songs are Easy and One Way, reggae numbers that fit in with the neo-roots movement in Jamaica. The latter features DJ Nicholas, whose dancehall energy has earned him fans across the board.

Easy is one of the songs released prior to June 19. The others are Cool & Deep, Expectations, Truly and If It Wasn’t.

Young is from Portland parish in eastern Jamaica. Although he was raised in the traditional church, it did not stop him from listening to dancehall stars like Agent Sasco and American Rhythm And Blues acts such as Anita Baker.

He found common ground with Ellis, who has collaborated with DJ Nicholas and Jason Mighty, another contemporary gospel singer. He has also worked as an engineer with Franklin, Beres Hammond and The Commodores.

“Canute understands the sound I have been producing over the years and has been sonically crafting it for several years,” said Young. “The consistency in tonality and the blend of sounds that you feel and hear are as a result of sticking consistently to and growing with just one source of that sound.”
