The historic Dorsey House in Overtown is the new home of Dress for Success Miami/Suited for Success, a non-profit organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women , men and youth by providing employment skills training and professional business clothing to help them thrive in work and in life.The Grand Opening event will take place on July 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Dorsey House, 250 N.W. 9th Street in Overtown, Miami, Florida with City of Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones presiding. Other dignitaries include Dr. Dorothy Fields, founder of The Black Archives and Gwendolyn Welters, Chairman of the Board of the Black Archives. “I am pleased to welcome The Success Center to Overtown,” said Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones. “Their upstanding reputation for helping residents obtain jobs and self sufficiency are much needed during such rough economic times. I look forward to working with them to ensure that residents within District 5 take advantage of this wonderful program”. “We are thrilled to be a new addition in the Overtown Community and look forward to providing our services to the businesses and residents that are here” said Sonia Jacobson, co-founder and executive director of Dress for Success Miami and Suited for Success. “We feel very much at home in the Dorsey House and our heartfelt thanks go to The Black Archives for this opportunity” Jacobson continued. “As we celebrate 15 years in Miami-Dade County this year, we look to our new home as “The Success Center” of Overtown”. About Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones Representing a new generation of leaders, Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones dedication to reclaiming and rebuilding her community is deeply rooted in placing public service over personal gain. Since being elected, the commissioner has worked tirelessly to begin to restore Miami’s most diverse and neglected neighborhoods in District 5, which includes: Model City, Overtown, Spring Garden, Little Haiti/ Historic Lemon City, Wynwood, Buena Vista East and West, Buena Vista Heights and Oakland Grove. She is committed to making her community a place where one would be proud to live, work, play and learn. About The Dorsey House The Dorsey house was originally built in 1914 by its owner, Dana Albert (D.A. 1872-1940) Dorsey. It was acquired in 1990 by The Black Archives, History and Research Foundation of South Florida Inc. It is listed on the U.S. Secretary of the Interior’s National Register of Historic Places. Following federal guidelines the reconstruction of the original house was completed in 1995. It is located at 250 N.W. 9th St, Miami, FL, 33136. About Dress for Success Miami/Suited for Success Dress for Success Miami /Suited for Success is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women, men and youth by providing employment skills training and professional business clothing.
