Miami Urban League urges fathers to join the Million Father March on August 23rd |

Monday,
August 23rd is the first day of classes for students in South Florida,
and also the day of the annual Million Father March, when fathers are
urged to be the ones to take their kids to school.
According to the Chicago-based Black Star Project, which started the
Million Father March in that city several years ago, increased
involvement by fathers can help children do better in school, and can
even reduce youth violence:
Instead of relying on police and further criminalizing American
children, The Black Star Project’s solution to youth violence in
America is the Million Father March, which means involving a multitude
of fathers and other connected and interested men in the continuing
educational and social development of their children. American youth
need male role-models and fathers to provide guidance and supportive
discipline, and the marching fathers and other men of the Million
Father March can provide this and do what the police have not done and
cannot do — bring peace to schools and communities across America.

More than 200 children receive book bags at Vice-Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz’s back-to-school ev |

More
than 200 children are now ready to start the school year with help from
Vice-Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz. On Tuesday, August 17, students and
their parents visited the District 12 office in Doral to receive a free
book bag and school supplies, donated in part by Walmart.
Vice-Chairman Diaz helped each child pick out a backpack they liked,
and the kids had a chance to meet Billy the Marlin and Nat Moore of the
Miami Dolphins. The children and their families also received goodies
from Rixys Public Relations, POWERade, Pop Chips, and Blue Bell Ice
Cream. G.R.O.W. also donated fresh basil for each family to cook a
healthy meal before school starts.

Miami-Dade Community Action Agency (CAA) and The Greater Miami Service Corps (GMSC), in partnership with the School for Integrated Academics and Technologies (SIATech) will be hosting a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Open House to launch their new on-site Charter School on Friday, August 13, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the Greater Miami Service Corps facility located at 810 N.W. 28th Street, Miami, Florida 33127. School bus safety is important for everyone to be aware of – whether you’re a child, parent or driver. The start of the school year means children will be waiting curbside to be picked up, either by the traditional yellow bus or a private van. They will undoubtedly run across streets to make sure they are not left behind, and they will almost certainly be distracted by cell phones or conversations with friends.

The Miami-Dade Consumer Services Department enforces laws that require chauffeurs to be licensed, trained and insured, and their vehicles registered, insured and inspected. |
