The public anger that has arisen since the announcement of new taxes last Thursday is understandable and I sympathize with the Jamaican people. The world-wide recession has hit us badly and I know that many Jamaicans are having it hard. In these difficult times, no one would want to impose additional taxes if there was a way it could be avoided. |

Jamaica's Tourism Minister Named Man of the Year |

Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett has been named Man of the Year by Ken Chaplain, distinguished columnist with the Jamaica Observer, one of the island’s leading newspapers. In his weekly column published on December 29, Mr. Chaplain noted that the Tourism Minister was his choice because of his tenacity and leadership of Jamaica’s tourist industry in a challenging year for the global industry. |

Nearly 7,000 Passengers on Board Three Cruise Ships on Wednesday |

Three more cruise ships visited St. Kitts Wednesday, bringing to the number of ships berthing for the week to 11.
Arriving from St. Thomas was the 2,850-passenger-118,000 ton Celebrity Solstice with 3,058 passengers on board and a crew of 1242. The Solstice sailed for St. Maarten. |

Reggae Marathon/Half Marathon and 10k, dubbed Jamaica’s premier International Marathon Event, took place along the scenic Negril coastline and attracted a host of sports enthusiasts, locals and visitors alike, who had the chance to experience the island’s beauty while competing in their quest for gold. |
