According to reports, Désirée Gibbon was found with her throat slashed on a rural road in the Caribbean island in November.
The 26-year-old from Queens, New York was reportedly in Jamaica to work to make enough money to attend school in Europe.
Gibbon reportedly last spoke to members of her family on Nov. 23, Thanksgiving Day in the United States. She was due to return to the U.S. early last month. Her family was left in shock by her murder.
“The brutality is what killed me,” Cali Gibbon, her Jamaican father, told the New York Daily News. “She was beaten and had her throat sliced open.”
Andrea Cali-Gibbon, her mother, said: “(There) are just no words for this tragic event.”
Gibbon reportedly appeared in beauty pageants and worked as a model from an early age.
“She loved life and wanted everyone to be happy and successful,” her mother noted.
